What Is a Pulpectomy?

A pulpectomy is a child’s root canal treatment that becomes necessary when the inner pulp of a child's tooth, containing blood vessels, tiny nerves, and tissues, becomes infected or traumatized due to deep decay or an injury. Unlike a pulpotomy (which removes part of the damaged pulp), a pulpectomy removes all the pulp to relieve tooth pain caused by an infection. At Magnum Dental Clinic, we are interested in saving baby teeth to prevent spacing issues and speech impairment.

Your child may need a pulpectomy if they experience:

  • 01.
Severe Toothache A constant or throbbing toothache often indicates infection has reached the tooth's inner pulp, requiring pediatric care to prevent spreading.
  • 02.
Swelling Around the Tooth Swollen gums or puffiness around a specific tooth usually means decay has reached the nerve and requires immediate treatment.
  • 03.
Pus or Abscess Formation The presence of pus or a small gum bump can signal a dental abscess, requiring urgent pulpectomy treatment to remove the infection.
  • 04.
Deep Untreated Cavities When cavities are left untreated, bacteria can travel deep into the pulp where simple fillings are no longer sufficient.
  • 05.
Tooth Discoloration After Trauma If a tooth turns gray or dark after a fall or injury, it may indicate silent nerve damage affecting the inner pulp.
  • 06.
Persistent Sensitivity Pain that lingers after eating hot or cold foods may signal a pulp infection, necessitating prompt treatment to protect permanent teeth.
